Wedding Food From Different Cultures - Food Friday

Posted on May 24, 2013 at 10:15 AM Comments comments (1)

Wedding food used to just be limited to beef, chicken, or if you were lucky, a fish option. Then there was a champagne toast with a boring white cake to follow. Fortunately in the past few years, couples have become infinitely more creative and have started incorporating not only more delicious food options onto their menus, but foods from their cultures, and those from around the world. Couples who are finding ways to set their celebration apart from the rest are discovering the best way to do so is to stray away from the American wedding menu, and venture into new territory.

With traditions from world cultures, couples can draw upon their diverse backgrounds to create a unique blend for their day. Variety is the spice of life, and these foods from around the world will certainly add a new flavor to your wedding. Whether you are searching for ways to incorporate your heritage into your day, interested in learning more about other cultures, or are just a foodie; read further for how other nations use food to celebrate on wedding days.

Bermuda: Wedding cakes are topped with a sapling, which then couple then plants in the garden.

China: Wedding banquets in China consist of eight courses. Peking duck is usually on the menu, because it is a red dish and because ducks mate for life. Another popular dish is chicken; showing balance. The whole bird would typically appear on the dish.

England: The fruitcake that often people shun during the holidays is an enduring wedding food tradition in England. Not all fruit cakes are frumpy; the elegant wedding cake appearing at the wedding reception of William and Kate (above) was a fruitcake!

France: French couples often forgo a traditional cake in favor of a croquembouche, which are cream puffs assembled into a tower, and held together with sugar. There is the theory that if a bride and groom could kiss over the top of the tower, without knocking it over, then they would enjoy a prosperous life together.

Italy: At weddings in Italy, guests will receive five sugared almonds. The almonds remind the couple that life can be both bitter and sweet.

Mexico: I’m sure you’ve heard of Mexican Wedding Cookies. These delicate, crumbly, and just-sweet treats will finish off the banquet at a Mexican wedding. The butter and sugar reminds the couple of the richness and love in togetherness. The cookies are finished off by being rolled in powdered sugar.

The Secret Garden - Theme Thursday

Posted on May 23, 2013 at 9:55 AM Comments comments (1)

Where, you tend a rose, my lad, a thistle cannot grow,” Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

Today’s wedding is inspired by the classic garden variety of The Secret Garden and the romance of Jane Austin’s novels. Though all-American, this couple wanted to bring some whimsy from across the pond to their big day with sweet details from the bespoke floral invitations, to the bouquets, and the venue.

The guests must have truly felt like they had been transported to an English garden in a different time. But although the wedding had many feminine touches, the bride didn’t want to take away from the fact that it was a shared day between she and her husband.

With all the spring flowers blooming, it is a perfect time for Essence of Events to feature this wedding and all the lovely features it includes. Check out all the pictures below for more of your own inspiration.

The bride and groom on their big day. The arch way is straight from an English garden, and her veil is like a fascinator; very British indeed.

The bespoke invitations, place settings, menu cards, and other text for the day have so much detail and beautiful touches. They are all miniature works of art.

The aisle and the alter are very vintage, antique, and boho chic.

The bride and groom after saying their "I-Do's."

The escort and seating chart holders. Everyone’s name is attached to a vintage bottle with a flower in it; find your name and it will tell you where you’re sitting. What a wonderful idea!

Very adorable napkins with fun facts at the cocktail hour.

The reception area.

I love how they have combined fruit into the centerpieces; it adds a beautifully whimsical touch to this already gorgeous table setting.

Antique cups and vases adorn the tables.

An up close of the table card numbers. After the wedding the bride and groom can frame these as art; they are quite beautiful and will be a lovely reminder of the day.

Using urns to display flowers will be popular this year for floral arrangements. The rug on the right displays the boho vibe the couple also incorporated into the theme of the day.

The garden party had a special “gentlemen’s corner” at the reception which had a vintage golf flare. Included were antique clubs, tee signs, plaid pillows, golf ball cake pops, and other touches like antlers, vintage cut glasses, alcohol bottles, and decanters.

The happy couple enjoying the wedding!
