Non-traditional, traditional wedding cakes. There’s a tongue twister for ya. It seems as if lately people have been forgetting the traditional wedding cakes, and instead have been going in the direction of cupcakes or cake pops. But there is something nice about a wedding cake; the layers, the cutting, and all the cohesiveness of one cake.
Traditional wedding cakes had been forgotten there for a couple of years, but slowly they are making their way back into wedding receptions again, but this time they aren’t the cakes of your parent’s days. No. These cakes are ultra-chic, super cool, and totally modern.
No more, three-tiered, boring, whatever. Prepared to be amazed, shocked, and awed! Cake pop, what?

Wizard of OZ Wedding - Theme Thursday

Inspiration can strike us no matter where we are. We can be walking down the street and see a tree and suddenly be struck with the idea to knit a moss colored blanket because you loved the way the pine needles hung from the branches. Okay, so maybe that’s a little out-there, but for this couple, inspiration struck them in the form of a classic book-turned movie.
The Wizard of Oz happens to be this couple’s inspiration for their reception, and the color scheme is emerald green (the emerald city), gold (the yellow brick road), and red (Dorothy’s ruby slippers). They used fun elements from this classic to bring their wedding to life, like rubber-stamped artwork, ruby slippers, and their own real-life Toto.

These pieces of art hung on the reception site walls to add to the theme of the evening.

Wildflower centerpieces adorn the tables that whimsically remind guests of the Land of Oz.

The cake is gold with poppies on it to remind guests of the yellow brick road, lined with poppies.

The cupcakes are adorned with hot air balloons, because of course, that’s the wizard’s preferred method of transportation! Her dress just reminds me of Glinda the Good Witch, and her shoes, who wouldn’t be jealous of those?! The Tin Man, he would for sure!
Even if a Wizard of Oz theme might not be right for you, we’d still love to help you find your inspiration, whatever that may be. Give us a call or email us with your questions and we would love to talk with you more about what inspires you.

Keira Knightley Weds - Wedding Wednesday

Well, if you haven’t heard already, Keira Knightley is officially a married woman. Haven taken on her biggest role to date; wife, she tied the knot to her fiancé of one year, James Righton, on Saturday.
The couple was married in an intimate ceremony at the town hall in Mazan, in a small village in Provence, in the South of France. Knightley, who is known for trend setting, may have just started a big one with her low-key nuptials.
The service was rumored to have only lasted about 30 minutes and was performed by the village mayor, and only about 30 or 50 guests were in attendance. Her small vow exchange was then followed by a more lavish party on the wine-growing farm she’s owned since 2010.
When I saw photos of her on the big day, she looked so happy, carefree, and in love. The way every bride should look on her wedding day. Without a care in the world, she skipped down the steps of City Hall in her blush pink, strapless tulle dress, and classic Chanel jacket. The Ray Bans, flats, and daisies in her loose hair just added to the easy-breezy feel of the moment.

Sometimes it can be hard to remember the importance of the reason behind your wedding day when so much can get out of hand. It can start to turn into a production; the matching bridesmaids dresses, random cousins you haven’t seen since your last family reunion, and a seven tiered cake that just about touches the ceiling, not to mention the bills that can stack up just about sky-high as well.

A City Hall and Courthouse wedding, like this couple, and Carrie and Mr. Big from Sex and the City (pictured above, right) prove that at the end of the day, a wedding should be a celebration of your love, the commitment you are making to one another, and the bond you share.
For help planning any size ceremony and reception, including smaller and more intimate affairs, Essence of Events, LLC will customize services to accommodate to your needs.
Committing yourselves to each other is one thing, but knowing the ins and outs of planning a wedding can be quite another. Whether having a smaller wedding or throwing a rocking big party, we definitely know how to do both!

Greeting Line Alternative - Tradition Tuesday

Sometimes receiving lines can seem as though they take forever, and as the hosts of your wedding, you want to be sure to enjoy the party too! To take the pressure off of the couple, there is a Scandinavian tradition that has become more popular in recent years at weddings across the country. This custom is a great alternative to a receiving line, or trying to spend the whole night visiting your guests at each and every table. This is an innovative way for newlyweds to enjoy their reception, and get the opportunity to see their guests as they stop by to say congratulations at the couple's table.
Place empty chairs directly across from the bride and groom for the guests to say their greetings and chat. We like the idea of making these signs to allow your guests to feel welcome to come and talk.

It’s a wonderful idea that is sure to make your wedding a memorable event for both you and your guests. Visitors will appreciate the time they get to spend saying their formal congratulations in person, while you, as a couple, will have more time to enjoy every aspect of your wedding reception.
Feel free to contact us with your family or culture's way of enjoying weddings; we would love to hear more ideas on this and other customs.
